Stripes made it into the painters’ water supply on the East coast in 2009. Unaware of each other’s efforts, many of us were concurrently exploring the possibilities as a new generation.
2009 facebook comment: Ken Johnson [critic, New York Times]: i’m a sucker for stripe paintings. i think it’s worth considering that we are vertical beings in a gravitational world, so we orient ourselves to the vertical, the horizontal and the diagonal. in the modern world, stripes are everywhere, visibly and invisibly, as are grids. so stripes are meaningful and, maybe, metaphorical. differences in quality of stripe paintings have to do with nuances: touch, color, edges. a stripe painting made with love is a good stripe painting.
Is “Mark”s Picture” listed on Flanders Gallery’s website still available? If so, what is the size and price. Thanks. Don Goodwin
Hi Don, Thanks for your interest. That painting, The One Whose Eyes Open, has been sold; I have several 18X24″ similar and one 60X66″ in progress. I will post them here as they are completed or I can send images to you of those near completion.
All best,
Mark
